Volatility and ATR: Measuring Market Range and Sizing Stops Around It
What the ATR indicator shows, typical daily ranges for the major pairs, and why a 30-pip stop behaves completely differently on EUR/USD and on gold.
Volatility is range, not direction. A market can be highly volatile and going nowhere; it can also grind steadily higher on minimal volatility. Confusing the two is a standard error.
ATR as a working tool
The ATR indicator averages the true range of the last N candles. True range accounts for gaps, which makes it more honest than plain high-minus-low.
Its practical value: ATR turns the vague "the market has calmed down" into a number you can size stops and targets from.
Rough daily ATR guides
| Instrument | Quiet | Active |
|---|---|---|
| EUR/USD | 50–70 pips | 90–120 |
| GBP/USD | 70–100 | 130–180 |
| USD/JPY | 50–80 | 100–150 |
| XAU/USD | 1,200–1,800 pips | 2,500+ |
These shift over time — read ATR off your own chart rather than a table.
How to apply it
Stops. 1–1.5 ATR of your timeframe. Tighter and noise takes you out; wider and per-trade risk becomes disproportionate.
Targets. A realistic intraday target rarely exceeds one to two daily ATR. Expecting three ATR in a session is usually wishful thinking.
Size. As ATR rises your pip stop widens, so volume must come down to keep money risk constant.
That last point is the one most often skipped. A trader keeps the usual lot, the market doubles its range, and per-trade risk quietly doubles with it.

Frequently asked questions
What is ATR?
Average True Range over N periods, usually 14. It shows how many pips an instrument covers per period on average. It measures range, not direction.
What is EUR/USD's daily ATR?
50–70 pips in quiet stretches, 90–120 in active ones. GBP/USD runs 30–50% higher, and gold is measured in hundreds of pips.
How do I size a stop with ATR?
Place it 1–1.5 ATR away on your working timeframe. The stop then adapts to current conditions instead of being a fixed pip count.
