Forex VPS: When You Need One, How to Choose It and Where to Get It Free
When a virtual server is genuinely necessary, which location gives the lowest latency, what specs are enough, and how broker-provided free VPS deals work.
A VPS is a virtual machine in a data centre that runs around the clock. Your terminal lives on it and keeps trading when your laptop is shut, your internet drops or your power goes out.
When it is genuinely needed
- Expert advisors. A robot only runs while the terminal is open. An hour offline can mean a missed entry or an unclosed position.
- MetaTrader trailing stops. They execute client-side and freeze with the terminal.
- Scalping. Latency to the broker's server directly affects your fill price.
If you trade manually, set stops and targets at entry and use no EAs, you do not need a VPS at all.
What matters when choosing
Location. The only truly important parameter. Most brokers host in London (Equinix LD4) or New York (NY4). A VPS in the same data centre gives 1–3 ms latency instead of 200 from Asia.
Support can tell you where the trading server sits — they get asked constantly.
Resources. 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM handles one terminal with a couple of EAs. For five terminals take 2 vCPU and 4 GB.
Uptime. Check the stated SLA. 99.9% allows up to 45 minutes of downtime a month, which can matter for an EA.
Free VPS from a broker
Many brokers offer a VPS free once you hit a balance or turnover threshold — typically $1,000–5,000 on the account or a few lots a month. If you already trade at that level, paying separately makes no sense.
Ask support two things: the data centre location, and what happens in a month where you miss the turnover requirement.
