Position Size Calculator

Calculates the lot size so that a stop-loss hit equals a chosen percentage of your account. Works for major forex pairs and gold.

Calculators use indicative values. Check live conditions in the broker's platform.

How to use it

Enter your account size, risk percentage, stop-loss distance in pips and the instrument. The calculator returns the volume in lots at which a stop-loss hit costs exactly the chosen percentage of your account.

Why this matters more than entries

Most accounts are lost not to bad entries but to oversized positions: 0.5 lots on a $1,000 account with a 40-pip stop is a 20% risk per trade. Two losses in a row take almost half the account. The same entry at 0.025 lots costs 1%.

Frequently asked questions

What risk per trade is reasonable?

For most systems 0.5–2% of the account. At 1%, a run of ten consecutive losses costs about 10% of the account, which any working strategy survives.

Why does the calculator show less than 0.01 lots?

The account is too small for that stop at that risk. Either widen the stop and lower the risk, or use a cent account (available at Vantage and VT Markets).
