Pips and Points in Forex: The Difference and What One Pip Is Worth
A pip is the standard step used to measure price movement. Four- and five-digit quotes, yen pairs, and a pip value table by lot size.
A pip is the smallest conventional step used to measure a move. For most pairs it is the fourth decimal: EUR/USD going from 1.0850 to 1.0870 is twenty pips.
Four digits and five
Quotes used to carry four decimals. Nearly every broker now shows a fifth — the fractional pip, or pipette. A price of 1.08503 means 1.0850 and three tenths. The extra digit exists so spreads can be priced precisely: 0.7 pips instead of rounding up to 1.0.

For any XXX/USD pair, a pip on a standard lot is exactly $10 — the quote currency is the dollar. As soon as the dollar becomes the base currency (USD/JPY, USD/CHF, USD/CAD), pip value depends on the rate and shifts daily.
Why bother measuring in pips
Pips are the only way to compare trades. Dollar profit says nothing about entry quality: $100 can come from five pips on a full lot or fifty pips on a tenth of one. The first is mostly luck; the second is a repeatable idea.
